Cast Thy Bread

“Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.” Ecclesiastes 11:1

I sit before an empty computer screen, my thoughts in turmoil. How do I write a devotional when my own heart hungers for encouragement? But the verse from Ecclesiastes keeps coming to mind. “Cast thy bread upon the waters…”

“Even when I’m hungry, Lord?”

“Yes, even then. I will help you.”

“But Lord, I’ve given away enough bread. I want to keep some for myself. Besides, I am sometimes afraid to give bread away.”

“I know. I will help you.”

“Lord, its not bread to eat I need. I have groceries. We even have “bread” enough to buy bread. I want the Bread of Life to be in me, to meet my needs. I want to know You will provide.”

“I know. I’ve already given you that Bread. I even broke it for you. You have that Bread within you; will you not share it even if you feel needy yourself?”

“I’ll try, Lord.”

“I know. I will help you.”

With the disciples I say, “Lord, evermore give us this bread.” (John 6:34)

“And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” (John 6:35)

“Here, Lord, I will cast my bread on the waters.”

“Ah, and you shall find it, though you may have to wait for many days.”

“Help me, Lord!”

“I will.”
