Flowing River

“…Out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38

In order to be useful to God we must be filled with the living water of His Spirit. As the living water flows out of our lives we can quench the thirst of dying souls around us. If we are not filled with living water, we have nothing to give. Being filled is a result of abiding in the vine and drawing our life from Him, moment by moment, day by day. I cannot fill myself. John 15 pictures it well when it says, “I am the vine, ye are the branches.” The branch cannot bear fruit of itself. It must be attached to the vine. Of myself, I am a lifeless branch and can do nothing that has eternal value. I must be connected to the vine and let His life flow through me.

We face two problems. One problem is constantly taking in the living water and never giving out. Going to church, listening to tapes, attending Bible studies, reading good books, and studying the Bible, but never sharing with other thirsty souls, makes us like a stagnant pool. When have you last shared your testimony? The second problem is being so zealous to share the living water that we do not take time to be filled. When we try to minister out of an empty vessel, we hurt rather than help. We say the wrong things or do things at the wrong time or in the wrong way.

We measure our fullness by the fruitfulness of our lives. What is my love level? Do I have joy; am I patient, gentle, kind, faithful, temperate? Does peace rule in my heart?

A woman’s son was murdered. During the trial, she screamed hateful words at his murderer. Another woman’s husband was murdered. In the courtroom, she said to the murderer, “I forgive you. Please accept this Bible. I pray that someday you will come to know the Jesus who meant so much to my husband.”

Which woman was filled with living water?
