The Grace of God

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 6:23

Death is eternal separation from God in Hell. Why is sin so offensive to God? If we could grasp His holiness, we would understand: our sin is like black ink on a snow white carpet.

I spent hours embroidering a certain quilt. My daughter and her cousin spent time playing underneath it with coloring books and crayons. Unbeknown to me, they were coloring the bottom of the quilt! When I took the quilt out of the frame, to my horror I discovered their misdeed. In an attempt to save the quilt which was meant to be sold, I took it to the dry cleaner. However, the cleaner had no expertise with quilts; the quilt came back to me a mass of wrinkles. I ended up washing it and using it myself because it was ruined and couldn't be sold.

The children had no comprehension of the damage they were doing. They were only having fun! Similarly, we grown-ups think we are having fun when we sin. We don't realize how offensive our sins are to a holy God. I could have made the children empty their penny banks. I could tell them they had to pay for the quilt, or I could forgive them and extend grace. They owed a debt they could not pay, and so do we. God extends grace to us, His gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ. Freely you have received, freely give!
