Helping the Hurting

“...for he oft refreshed me...” 2 Timothy 1:16

The hurting need to be refreshed. Circumstances weigh people down, causing them to focus inwardly. How can we help?

Say something - “How's it going? How can I pray for you? I care. I see you're hurting.”

Do something - Send a card or flowers. Call, take a casserole (everyone eats!), plan an outing, give a book or CD.

Pray - Pray not only for them, but also with them.

Visit - Put thought into the visit. Imagine being in their shoes, and empathize. Go at an appropriate time. Let them talk about their pain.

Listen - Just listen. Don't give advice unless asked, but listen with eyes and ears.

Weep - Let them weep, and weep with them.

Don't quote “...all things work together for good to them that love God...” (Romans 8:28). They may need to hear it, but not from you.

Don't say “I know just how you feel.” Each situation is unique.

Don't say “If you need me, call me.” Be there! See for yourself what needs done, and ask if you may do it.

Don't consider your “duty” completed after one action. Reach out occasionally as long as their hurt continues.

God bless you as you help the hurting today!
