“Sow to yourselves in righteousness, reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the Lord, till he come and rain righteousness upon you.” Hosea 10:12
All around us fields and gardens are waiting to be planted. For weeks now each time the ground is nearly dry enough for spring planting another band of storms dump rain onto the recently saturated ground. Farmers are itching to break up the ground and sow. I suppose many of them are becoming quite disgruntled, grumbling and complaining about not being able to sow their crops.
There is more to sow than seeds. This verse speaks of sowing righteousness and reaping mercy—a delightful thought. How is that done? By seeking the Lord…till he rains righteousness upon you. Wow! Imagine God raining as much righteousness on me as we had rain in April! I like that thought so well I think I will try to remember to pray whenever it rains, “Lord, please rain righteousness on me today.” The Bible speaks of the righteousness of man as filthy rags. But the righteousness of God, rained upon us, is pure and perfect.
Rain righteousness on us, O God.
